How do you find the soul of a city when the clock is always ticking?
At Chrysalis Tours, our entire philosophy is built on creating transformative travel experiences. For us, travel isn't just about seeing new places; it’s about feeling them, understanding them, and carrying a piece of them home with you. So when the Singapore Tourism Board (STB) challenged us to find new ways to promote our island's incredible local products, our director, Notle Chew, saw it as more than a business directive—it was a philosophical question.
He obsessed over the numbers. The average visitor spends just 3.5 days in Singapore. 84 hours. Once you account for flights, sleep, and moving between locations, that window of pure, unadulterated discovery shrinks dramatically. It’s a frantic race against time, often leaving travelers feeling like they’ve only skimmed the surface.
Travelers today are seeking authenticity. They crave more than a factory-made keychain; they want a story, a taste of local kaya, a handcrafted piece of jewelry that whispers tales of its creator. Yet, finding these treasures often means sacrificing the very thing they came here for: the experience. It means choosing between exploring a vibrant neighborhood and a long detour to a specific shop. It means choosing between soaking in a sunset at Marina Bay and a frantic last-minute hunt for souvenirs.
This was the core of the problem. We were inadvertently forcing visitors into a dilemma: explore the city, or shop for a piece of it? It was a choice that contradicted everything we stood for. A transformative experience shouldn't be about compromise.
The breakthrough came not from thinking about logistics, but from thinking about the feeling of travel itself. What if the two weren't separate? What if discovering local products could be woven seamlessly into the fabric of the journey, rather than being a detour from it?
“What if we could kill two birds with one stone?” Notle wondered. “Instead of sending the traveler to the product, what if we brought the product to the traveler?”
It was a simple idea that changed everything. Imagine a visitor, weeks before their flight, planning their Singapore adventure. Alongside booking tours and restaurants, they could browse a curated collection of our city's best artisans. They could order a beautifully designed scarf or a box of artisanal pineapple tarts from the comfort of their home. Then, very soon after checking into their hotel, their handpicked local treasures would be waiting for them.
The discovery happens before the trip, and the experience begins the moment they arrive. This wasn't just about convenience. This was about transforming the entire experience—giving travelers the freedom to stay immersed in the moment, while still connecting deeply with the local culture. This is how the Chrysalis Marketplace was born, as the natural extension of our travel philosophy. It’s a platform designed not just to sell products, but to enrich the journey, one thoughtful delivery at a time.
